Last year was a phenomenal year for Movimiento Cultural. Here are some of the highlights of 2019:
· We performed and hosted workshops throughout the year, including 26 separate events in New Haven and around the state. Among them were Fiesta Latina! (hosted by the Peabody Museum and Junta); The City of New Haven Board of Alder’s Black & Hispanic Caucus 8th Annual Awards Gala; The New Haven Festival of Arts & Ideas; and Roberto Clemente Day in Hartford YardGoats Field.
· We were honored by Puerto Ricans United, receiving their 2019 Arts and Culture Award at their annual gala last July;
· We provided the drumming for La Negra, a Bomba play that debuted at Yale’s Hopper Theater last winter.
· We held weekly drumming and dancing workshops, catering to all ages and teaching students at all levels.
Our contributions to the cultural life of New Haven received the highest accolades by the Arts Council of Greater New Haven’s Arts Paper, which in December listed the Bomba as Number One of their “Top Ten Artistic Moments”of 2019. Our impact was described as follows:
Across New Haven this year, Puerto Rican bomba pulsed through the city’s veins, lending New Haven a vibrant and propulsive heartbeat… It is a healing form, rallying cry, and old-school messaging network of both release and revolt, so clear in lyrics like “Cada día sufriendo más/si no bailo esta bomba, me voy a morir” (“Every day I’m suffering more/If I don’t dance this bomba, I’m going to die”). This year, Movimiento Cultural, bomba veterans Sarahi Ayala and Carlos Cruz, and others brought the form to almost all of the city’s neighborhoods.
We begin the new year excited to build on the work that MCAC accomplished last year. This year, we will continue to host free weekly dance and drumming workshops for students at three levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced). We plan to partner with schools to be able to bring the Bomba to students in the form of educational forums and workshops. We will host quarterly Master classes for our ensemble with top bomba performers from the island, and we will continue to perform all around the state. Finally, we will devote significant attention to building the capacity of Movimiento Cultural, seeking a permanent space for us to teach and practice while transitioning the organization from an all-volunteer organization.
We invite you to join us and support our work. Check out the calendar of events, invite us to perform at one of your events; join one of our workshops and/or consider making a tax deductible contribution so that we are able to continue to celebrate the Bomba -- Puerto Rico’s oldest dance and music form.
